From Automotive to Aviation
We spoke with Ionut Dolcu, a professional with more than 15 years of experience who made the switch from the automotive industry to the dynamic world of aviation. He is originally from Romania and is working in the Netherlands for the first time. Through WFS PRO, he now works as a Manufacturing Engineer at GKN Fokker Landing Gear. We asked him about his work, the challenges he faces, and his collaboration with WFS PRO.
Can you tell us a little about your role?
“I work as a Manufacturing Engineer at GKN Fokker Landing Gear, specifically on landing gear. My role is a little different than usual; 90% of it focuses on quality. I am responsible for the First Article Inspection. That means I validate all internal changes in the production process with the customer. Without that validation, we simply cannot deliver, so it is a crucial step.”
What does a typical workday look like for you?
“My days often start with meetings to plan everything in advance. The work is very dynamic; an inspection can sometimes take days, but sometimes months. My main task is to prepare complex documentation packages. I use these to validate all internal adjustments with the customer before we implement the change in series production.”
What is the most challenging part of your job?
“The biggest challenge is planning all activities correctly and following up on them. You have to convince people from different departments to work on your projects, even though they are very busy themselves. It requires continuous negotiation and good interpersonal skills.”
And what do you like best?
“The contact with the customer. I am really on the front line; I am involved in audits and maintain a good relationship with the customer. A highlight was at the end of last year, when I managed to unblock deliveries for a major customer. That was an important milestone.”
You have a background in the automotive industry. How do you like the transition to aerospace?
“To be honest, I like it more than I expected. I had always been curious about this sector. The workload is different; there is less time pressure because the products have a much longer life cycle. I really enjoy my work, the company, and the atmosphere in the office. It is challenging and keeps me on my toes.”
How did you come into contact with WFS PRO?
“My situation was a bit unusual. I came to the Netherlands through another agency, but they failed to get my work permit and documentation in order. My manager at Fokker then called in WFS PRO to take over the process. From that moment on, everything went very quickly.”
How did WFS PRO support you?
“They helped me enormously. Not only with the necessary documents, but also with finding accommodation and arranging my social security number. Suddenly I had three apartments to choose from, which was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. The communication is also excellent. If I have a question, I send Wesley or Niels a message and I get an immediate response and the issue is resolved. I really appreciate that level of commitment."
Would you recommend WFS Pro to other professionals?
“Yes, absolutely. WFS PRO does its job well. They ensure that everything, such as accommodation and administration, is perfectly arranged. This allows me to focus fully on my work and performance. That's exactly what you expect from a good agency.”
