Wave of change in the Marine & Offshore industry

How industry struggles with aging population and declining influx of young talent

The Dutch Marine & Offshore industry has been among the world's best for decades. Innovation, craftsmanship and a strong export position form the foundation of this sector. But beneath that solid surface bubbles a challenge that is becoming increasingly urgent: the aging workforce and declining number of maritime students.

Aging puts pressure on industry

A significant portion of the industry's workforce is 50 or older. Many of them are nearing retirement, and their departure leaves a gap that is difficult to fill.

At the same time, companies are noticing a decrease in the availability of young professionals. In particular, positions such as mechanical draftsman, shipbuilding engineer or offshore technician are increasingly difficult to fill. Where there used to be a steady stream of fresh graduates entering the workforce, the supply is getting smaller.

Where are the maritime students?

Maritime studies, both at the MBO, HBO and WO levels, are seeing their student numbers decline. Young people are more often choosing broader courses or courses with a more modern or greener image, such as IT or renewable energy.

Social pressure surrounding fossil energy, stricter regulations and international competition also play a role. The sector must continue to reposition itself as both innovative and forward-looking.
