5 tips for your cv

Ágnes Bajna, our Recruitment Sourcing Specialist, shares 5 tips for a strong cv for the Dutch job market.

Every country has its own preferences and cultural differences, and this is no different when it comes to writing a CV and applying for a job. Understanding these cultural differences is crucial when applying for jobs, as they influence the expectations of employers.

It is also important to consider the requirements in your specific field. Academic CVs differ significantly from general applications. In the Netherlands they value directness and honesty in communication, so it’s best to be clear and transparent on your CV when applying to.

Here are some tips to help you create a strong CV for the Dutch job market:

1. Ideal CV Length

An ideal CV is typically concise and focuses on the most relevant information for the position you’re applying for. In general, a CV should ideally be one or two pages long. However, this can vary depending on your level of experience and the job requirements. Regardless of length, prioritize quality over quantity and include only information directly relevant to the job.

2. Photo requirements

A photo is optional in Dutch CVs. I recommend submitting a CV with a recent, clear, and professional photo. The background should be simple, and you should have a friendly and professional expression.

3. Format Requirements

  • Begin with personal details: Name, address, phone number, email address, and nationality. Clearly indicate if you are eligible to work in the Netherlands or require visa sponsorship.
  • Consider including a brief personal profile highlighting your key skills, experiences, and career goals.
  • Work Experience: Prioritize quality over quantity. List experiences in reverse chronological order, highlighting responsibilities and achievements relevant to the job.
  • Education: List your educational background starting with the most recent degree or qualification.
  • Skills: Include hard (technical) skills and soft skills relevant to the job.
  • Language proficiency: Clearly indicate language skills.

4. Readability

  • Choose a clear and professional font type and size. The CV should be easy to read.
  • Take into account the page margins as well.
  • Print your CV in black and white to verify the readability.

5. Accuracy and Honesty

Ensure all information is truthful and accurate. Dutch employers value honesty and transparency.

By following these tips and tailoring your CV to the specific requirements of the Dutch job market, you can increase your chances of success in your job search.
