How the sector is struggling with an ageing workforce and declining influx of young talent
For decades, the Dutch Marine & Offshore industry has ranked among the world’s best. Innovation, craftsmanship and a strong export position form the foundation of this sector. But beneath that solid surface lies a challenge that is becoming increasingly urgent: an ageing workforce and a declining number of maritime students.
Ageing workforce puts pressure on the sector
A significant portion of the workforce is aged 50 and older. Many are approaching retirement, and their departure is leaving a gap that’s difficult to fill.
At the same time, companies are seeing a drop in the availability of young professionals. Roles such as mechanical drafter, naval engineer and offshore technician are becoming harder to fill. Where there used to be a steady stream of new graduates entering the field, the supply is now shrinking.
Where are the maritime students?
Maritime education programs—at vocational (mbo), applied sciences (hbo), and university (wo) levels—are seeing a decline in student numbers. Young people are more often choosing broader studies or programs with a more modern or greener image, such as IT or sustainable energy.
Social pressure around fossil fuels, stricter regulations and international competition are also playing a role. The sector must continue to reposition itself as both innovative and future-focused.
